This is Neal Kurk’s Bill and make no mistake about it, it’s a watered down privacy Bill. This is a compromise with the NH DOE and needs significant improvement. There are NO provisions to protect student data going to 3rd party vendors from your school district.
IF you want to further protect student privacy at the LOCAL level, contact Rep. Cordelli (Glenn.Cordelli@leg.state.nh.us) and ask him for information that you can take to your School Board to implement a policy on student privacy.
Rep. Cordelli offered legislation this year that went much further than Kurk’s Bill but that went to a study committee where legislation goes to die.
HB 1587-FN-L, relative to the collection and disclosure of student data.
Ought to Pass, Vote 5-0. Senator Sanborn for the committee.
This bill regulates the collection and distribution of student data by placing limitations on the New Hampshire Department of Education in collecting and retaining private and individual student data information. This bill, however, will not limit school districts from collecting and aggregating student data that is not individually identifiable. The Committee feels that this bill will help to protect the privacy of students throughout the state.
