Diane Sheehan, Candidate for Executive Council gets Common Core WRONG. She states below that Common Core’s focus on higher standards and the so-called STEM subjects “can be a good thing”.
One has to wonder, does she even know that the Common Core Standards do NOT prepare students for STEM college programs or careers? One has to wonder, has she even read them? Maybe it’s the ole “let’s adopt them to see what’s in them” excuse?
Diane, let us clue you in, the Common Core Standards DO NOT prepare students for STEM programs at the College level. Here is what the LEAD WRITER of the Common Core Math Standards said himself:
Jason Zimba: the chief drafter of the math standards said:
• Common Core college readiness is a minimal definition of college readiness
• Common Core is not for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)
• Common Core is not for selective colleges
• Common Core does not prepare students to take College calculus (source: http://www.restorecaeducation.com/)
From Diane Sheehan’s interview in the Nashua Telegraph:
On education, Sheehan said while Common Core “isn’t perfect,” she acknowledged it’s a “step in the right direction,” although it comes with costs that could be an issue, especially, she said, for residents in poorer communities.
Common Core’s focus on higher standards and the so-called STEM subjects “can be a good thing,” Sheehan said, in light of the fact the No Child Left Behind movement wasn’t working.
