Reading Instruction in Kindergarten: Little to Gain and Much to\u00a0Lose,\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>(<a href=\"http:\/\/deyproject.org\/2015\/01\/13\/our-new-report-reading-instruction-in-kindergarten-little-to-gain-and-much-to-lose\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/deyproject.org\/2015\/01\/13\/our-new-report-reading-instruction-in-kindergarten-little-to-gain-and-much-to-lose\/<\/a>) <\/p>\n<p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/deyproject.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/01\/readinginkindergarten_online-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/deyproject.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/01\/readinginkindergarten_online-1.pdf<\/a>).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The DEY report\u00a0has a few sections that mention the Bank Street developmental reading skills kindergarten children need, but I did not see an extensive explanation about phonemic awareness nor about phonics.\u00a0 I also did not see those all-important phonemic awareness\/decoding skills mentioned in the \u201cRecommendations\u201d contained in the DEY report.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the Sources, I did not see any references to:<\/p>\n<p>National Right To Read \u2013 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrrf.org\/research-archive\/#national-studies\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.nrrf.org\/research-archive\/#national-studies<\/a>)\u00a0 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrrf.org\/explore\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.nrrf.org\/explore\/<\/a>\u00a0)<\/p>\n<p>Phonemic awareness \u2013 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrrf.org\/learning\/scientific-principles-of-reading-instruction\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.nrrf.org\/learning\/scientific-principles-of-reading-instruction\/<\/a>)\u00a0 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrrf.org\/learning\/overview-of-nichd-reading-and-literacy-initiatives\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.nrrf.org\/learning\/overview-of-nichd-reading-and-literacy-initiatives\/<\/a>\u00a0)<\/p>\n<p>Synthetic phonics &#8212;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Synthetic_phonics\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Synthetic_phonics<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Marilyn Jager Adams\u2019\u00a0Beginning To Read, c. 1994 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Beginning-Read-Thinking-Learning-about\/dp\/0262510766\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Beginning-Read-Thinking-Learning-about\/dp\/0262510766<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>MRI\u2019s \u2013 (<a href=\"http:\/\/news.stanford.edu\/news\/2012\/september\/austen-reading-fmri-090712.html\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/news.stanford.edu\/news\/2012\/september\/austen-reading-fmri-090712.html<\/a>\u00a0) (<a href=\"http:\/\/healthland.time.com\/2013\/02\/20\/researchers-find-a-biological-marker-for-dyslexia-in-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/healthland.time.com\/2013\/02\/20\/researchers-find-a-biological-marker-for-dyslexia-in-kids\/<\/a>) (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.childrenofthecode.org\/interviews\/shaywitz.htm#WhatBrainScans\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.childrenofthecode.org\/interviews\/shaywitz.htm#WhatBrainScans<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>The empirical National Institute of Child Health and Development, National Institutes of Health (NICHD) reading research\u00a0(\u201cThe NICHD Reading Research Program\u201d &#8212;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2003\/01\/The-NICHD-Reading-Research-Program.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.cdl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2003\/01\/The-NICHD-Reading-Research-Program.pdf<\/a>\u00a0) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nichd.nih.gov\/publications\/pubs\/Documents\/reading_centers.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/www.nichd.nih.gov\/publications\/pubs\/Documents\/reading_centers.pdf<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>It is as if the writers of the DEY report, while criticizing Common Core, have themselves failed to validate the NICHD\u2019s reading research which is the best, most expensive, peer-reviewed, replicated, independent reading research that has ever been done in America.<\/p>\n<p>I am concerned that the writers of the DEY report are themselves rather limited in their understanding of the scientific\/medical research done by the NICHD under Dr. Reid Lyon and his team.\u00a0 The whole language\/holistic\/New Jersey Writing Project crowd vilified Dr. Reid Lyon politically and eventually managed to disrupt the implementation of the NICHD reading research, but I hate to see the DEY group falling into the same trap of acting as if the NICHD empirical reading research never occurred.<\/p>\n<p>Even though No Child Left Behind (NCLB) has other problems, the NICHD reading academies under (NCLB) worked because they taught teachers about phonemic awareness\/decoding skills (phonics).\u00a0 During the President G. W.
