Executive Councilor Chris Pappas: BAD For Public Education in New Hampshire

Categories: Oh My BLOG!

After all of the slick fliers and campaign ads we’ve been bombarded with lately, I found one particularly interesting and thought, maybe readers might not catch the attempt to mislead voters on November 4th.

I’m talking about the latest flier from Executive Councilor Chris Pappas. Pappas is serving in the towns of: towns of Allenstown, Auburn, Barrington, Bedford, Bow, Candia, Chichester, Deerfield, Epsom, Goffstown, Hooksett, Lee, Londonderry, Loudon, Northwood, Nottingham, Pembroke, and Pittsfield, and the city of Manchester. This position is important because the Executive Councilors oversee the Governor.

In the Pappas ad it says: “I want to keep politics out of the Council chamber, especially when it comes to critical decisions like expanding access to health care coverage.” – Chris Pappas

That’s a great line to add to a campaign flier, it’s just too bad he doesn’t follow his own advice.

Lee Nyquist (Candidate for NH Senate) Too Cowardly To Answer Questions on Common Core?

Lee Nyquist was asked by Stop Common Core in New Hampshire on Facebook  and other constituents, what his position is on Common Core.  It’s a simple question that could easily be answered yet he’s choosing to IGNORE the question.

If he’s willing to ignore his constituents NOW, can you imagine what he’d be like as a NH Senator?

A short time ago, we brought you the story about how Democrats in New Hampshire were RUNNING from this ISSUE and QUESTION.

YES, some have come out and said that they support Common Core which harms our teachers & students. (Senator Hosmer, Exec. Councilors Pappas and VanOstern via Bill Duncan appt)  But then there are some who are taking the cowardly route and hiding and dodging the question.

Nyquist is attempting to UNSEAT Sen. Andy Sanborn.   Sanborn hasn’t run from this question and opposes Common Core.  We have to assume that’s because he knows this federal reform incorporates lousy academic standards, data-mines information on students & their families and targets teachers as the problem for failing schools.

SANBORN is worthy of re-election for opposing Common Core.   Our public schools and teachers deserve BETTER than Lee Nyquist.

Missing or Delayed in Common Core’s Mathematics Standards

By: R. James Milgram (Stanford University)

(Editors note: remember, this is what Gov. Hassan, Sen. Hosmer, Exec. Councilors Pappas, and VanOstern think is GOOD for YOUR children)

Kindergarden-7th Grade:

“Absolutely nothing in CC will prepare students to take Algebra  1 in grade 8. “

CC places children behind BEFORE Middle school:   (reducing likelihood of getting on the CA ‘advanced’ math path; and thereby selective colleges).   “K-7 standards are mathematically incompetent”

  • CC does not require proficiency with addition and subtraction until Grade 4 (a grade behind our international competitors).
  • CC does not require proficiency with multiplication using the standard algorithm (step-by-step procedure for calculations) until Grade 5 (a grade behind standard expectations).
  • CC does not require proficiency with division using the standard algorithm until Grade 6 (a grade behind our international competitors).
  • CC starts teaching decimals in Grade 4 (about two years behind the more rigorous states) and fails to use money as a natural introduction to this concept.
  • CC fails to teach in K-8 about key geometrical concepts (e.g., area of a triangle, sum of angles in a triangle, isosceles and equilateral triangles, etc.).
  • Excludes:  sum of angles of a triangle, except that it magically expects students to know it in grade 8
  • Excludes: fluent conversion between different forms of fractions – regular fractions, decimals, and percents
  • CC fails to teach prime factorization.  Consequently, CCS does not include teaching about least common denominators or greatest common factors.

Algebra 1:  critical components missing which are required for Algebra 2 and Calculus: (Source: Ze’ev Wurman)

1. division of monomials and polynomials (only      addition/subtraction/multiplication is covered).
2. Derive and understand slopes of parallel and perpendicular      lines.
3. Manipulate & simplify rational expressions
4. Multi-step problems with linear equations and inequalities
5. Multi-step problems with four operations between polynomials.
6. Multi-step problems involving manipulation of rational expressions
7. Solve a system of two linear inequalities in two variables and to sketch the solution sets.

CC de-emphasizes algebraic manipulation, a prerequisite for advanced mathematics.  Instead, CCS redefines algebra as “functional algebra,” which does not prepare students for STEM careers.

Non-Calif.   this was added in Calif.’s CC version, but missing in the National CC standards):
8. Solving Equations and inequalities with absolute value, and      problems with such.
9. Solve problems with quadratic expressions

Algebra 2: critical components missing which are required for Calculus: Source: Zeev Standards Testimony

  • composite functions
  • combinations and permutations
  • finite and infinite arithmetic and geometric sequences
  • mathematical induction
  • CC excludes certain Algebra II and Geometry content that is a prerequisite at almost every four-year college.

CC replaces the traditional foundations of Euclidean geometry with an experimental approach.

Executive Councilor Chris Pappas: BAD for NH students

IMPORTANT FOR RESIDENTS IN: Allenstown, Auburn, Barrington, Bedford, Bow, Candia, Chichester, Deerfield, Epsom, Goffstown, Hooksett, Lee, Londonderry, Loudon, Northwood, Nottingham, Pembroke, and Pittsfield, and the city of Manchester

Executive Councilor: Chris Pappas voted to SUPPORT the PRO-COMMON CORE POLITICAL ACTIVIST: Bill Duncan for the NH Board of Ed.

Bill Duncan having NO prior experience in education has been working as a political activist in NH and was appointed to the NH Board of Ed by Governor Maggie Hassan.

Cronies of Governor Hassan should not be appointed to the Board of Ed. She should be looking for individuals who’ve been actively engaged in education and can bring knowledge and expertise to this important position.

Councilor Pappas IGNORED the HUGE number of calls and e-mails asking him to REJECT Governor Hassan’s appointment. He is NOT listening to his constituents but instead, rubber stamping activists who promote the dumbed down Common Core Standards for NH public school students.

If you LIVE in any of those towns listed above, PLEASE share this information.
BOB BURNS is seeking to UNSEAT Pappas and is OPPOSED to COMMON CORE.

DUNCAN is CONFIRMED and Parents go IGNORED again

The latest appointment to the New Hampshire Board of Ed drew quite a response from parents across New Hampshire.  Parents who support school choice, Charter Schools and oppose Common Core organized a valiant effort to oppose the appointment of Bill Duncan (political activist) the the New Hampshire Board of Education.

Unfortunately, their voices fell on deaf ears again.

Similar to HB 1508, legislation to terminate Common Core in New Hampshire, parents came out in large numbers to oppose Duncan’s appointment to the Board of Ed.

Councilors Joe Kenney and Chris Sununu both commented on how they received an enormous amount of calls and e-mails on this ONE controversial nomination.  They listened and both voted against Governor Hassan’s nomination.

Councilors Pappas, Van Ostern and Pignatelli all supported the nomination.  The vote was 3 to 2 split down party lines.  Republicans OPPOSED and Democrats SUPPORTIVE.

Many parents across the state came out in opposition for various reasons.  Duncan opposes School Choice and is the leading plaintiff in the lawsuit against New Hampshires School Choice scholarship program.  He has also been opposed Charter Schools.

At stopcommoncorenh.org we try to focus on Common Core related issues and also felt this appointment was wrong for New Hampshire because of Duncan’s activism in support of Common Core.

It is time to take a hard look at those who support Common Core in New Hampshire and those who support Common Core activists like Duncan.

There has been testimony from professionals on the developmentally inappropriateness of the Common Core Standards.  This has been confirmed by Licensed Child Psychologists, teachers and Math and English content experts.

However we think it’s important to hear directly from a teacher who sums up what this really means: CHILD ABUSE.

While that is a strong term, if a teacher reports child abuse, it must be acted upon.  So if what we are doing to children in the classroom raises to the level of child abuse as this teacher claims, and the Common Core Standards are developmentally INAPPROPRIATE, what are these people doing to our children in New Hampshire?

Governor Hassan chose the most radical and extreme political activist in New Hampshire to serve on the New Hampshire Board of Education.  Has she given any consideration to the charges that are being leveled in this national debate?  Has she made any kind of statement that things are different in the New Hampshire public schools?  How can they be when almost all of them are using the Common Core Standards and will be subjected to the test that Nashua teachers said were inappropriate for children?

After you watch the video below ask yourself, are these the kind of people we want making decision for our children in our schools?  Or should we elect legislators who are willing to listen to parents and do the right thing? Common Core’s Child Abuse
